Can Allison Mack's outfit be saved or like Smallville is it hopeless?

As you may have seen, the people at Go Fug Yourself, criticized Allison Mack's outfit for Smallville's Comic Con presentation in July.
Here's the link:
http://gofugyourself.celebuzz.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-search.cgi?blog_id=1&tag=dress%20over%20pants&limit=10&IncludeBlogs=1

They particularly didn't like the dress over pants look. I think Allison Mack looked very pretty facially, but I have to agree her bohemian outfit wasn't cute or flattering.

My question is was it possible to save the outfit thru some small change or was it a total wipe out? I don't think taking off the pants alone would have done it, although if Allison Mack had a nice tan on her legs, showing some skin definitely would have improved the situation. I considered a gold belt to draw attention to Allison Mack's small waist. The red sweater is very iffy, but the dress is shapeless by itself, so at least the red sweat provides some contrast and form.

Anyone have any ideas on what could have been done?

I'm wondering if some heels might have saved it.
http://content.nordstrom.com/ImageGallery/store/product/Gigantic/11/_5873531.jpg
http://content.nordstrom.com/ImageGallery/store/product/Gigantic/8/_5836448.jpg
http://content.nordstrom.com/ImageGallery/store/product/Gigantic/14/_5771654.jpg
http://content.nordstrom.com/ImageGallery/store/product/Large/6/_5790086.jpg
http://content.nordstrom.com/ImageGallery/store/product/Gigantic/16/_5766516.jpg

http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446231785&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=282574492709243&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474399545537&bmUID=1249597851029&ev19=1:23

"Lost in Austen" - if you love Austen this is a fun story

Lost in Austen" Plot summary:
A twist on Jane Austen's classic novel, this four-part series sees disillusioned modern working girl Amanda Price 'swap' her life for Austen's celebrated heroine, Elizabeth Bennet. Trapped in the unfolding fiction, Amanda must try her utmost to stop the events in the book derailing, as her presence in the characters' lives sets other episodes in motion. When Amanda Price returns home from a bad day at work, she is amazed to find Elizabeth Bennet in her bathroom, who discloses she arrived through a long-boarded up door that leads through to her family home. Intrigued, Amanda steps through the portal and discovers herself at Longbourne...

<lj-embed id="14" />
All 4 parts are up on youtube by the person who put up this video. Somtimes there are 11 parts to one episode bc of how the poster broke up the episodes, but if you're a big Austen fan, it's worth all the clicking. This is a fun, clever take on the original material. I had seen a Brit on my flist mention this before, but not looked into it until Chiri mentioned it again yesterday. If you're looking for something light, this is exactly that.
*SEASON 4*

4.02 Gone
Investigating alone, Lois digs Chloe's empty grave and ends up standing in the grave herself.

4. 16 Lucy
About her sister
Lois: The world would be a whole lot worse without her in it than without me, right? She’s the one with the future.

4.22 Commencement
The end of the episode could be foreshadowing of the character‘s destinies. Jason dies alone. Lana is leaving Smallville alone. The Kents are home together as it is hit. Lionel lies in bed alone having been left by Lex. Like Lionel, Lois lies in a field alone having helped Chloe get where she wanted to go. Meanwhile, Chloe, Lex and Clark are together in the Kawatche caves which Lex describes as the “epicenter.”

*SEASON 5*

5.9 Lexmas
Spirit guide Lillian Luthor shows Lex a possible future if he chooses to give up his ambition. Every cast member is included in the vision of the future except for Erica Durance.

5.14 Tomb
Michael ties up Lois and Chloe (who is possessed by the ghost of Michael’s victim, Gretchen) Michael places a bracelet on Chloe’s wrist and gives Lois a knife to kill herself. When Lois doesn’t obey, they struggle and Michael knocks Lois unconscious. Gretchen/Chloe tricks Michael into getting close to her and she kills him saving herself and Lois.

5.18 Fade
Martha: I think we go through these bad relationships for a reason.
Lois: Well, if there's a good reason for all the pain and aggravation, I'm dying to know.

*SEASON 6*

6. 06 Rage
Clark: Lois, I'm sure you'll find someone who's better suited for you.
Lois: Yeah, I know, I know -- life goes on…at least for some people.

6.17 Combat
The Fight Club owner, Richter Maddox, claims he is psychic and names Clark, the “Man of Steel” because “it’s a name no one’s ever going to forget.” Maddox tells Clark he’s going to warm him up with an easy fight because “all the fans want to see is somebody die” enter Lois who is soon knocked unconscious by the killing machine Titan and disappears for the rest of the episode.

6.20 Noir
In Jimmy’s dream, dressed in white, ED plays a singer called Angel who disappears after Lex Luthor kisses her. In the main reality of the episode, Lionel warns Lois that she is playing a serious game and whoever was willing to kill Lana would not think twice of silencing her

6.21 Prototype
She is nearly killed by former flame who left her and ended up marrying his blonde co-worker.

6.22 Phantom
Chloe warns Lois against taking on the Luthors because “not only will victory remain elusive, but you're almost certain to step on a land mine in the process.” Chloe tells her cousin about Lex “I don’t want him to hurt someone else that I care about.” Lois disregards the warning, investigates on her own, gets stabbed by a Luthorcorp guard, and seems to die. Chloe responds to her phone call and heals Lois. Had Chloe not responded to the phone call, her cousin would have died.

*SEASON 7*

7.05 Action

About a death in the Warrior Angel Comics which Lex read as a kid

Lex: One of my favorites. It's the first time the archrival Devilicus gets the upper hand. Warrior Angel's girlfriend gets in over her head. In trying to expose Devilicus' darkness, she goes face to face with one of the most powerful villains in the Fantasy Comics universe. So Devilicus does something no reader sees coming. He shoots her. Warrior Angel can't get there in time, and she dies in his arms.

Clark: I read the script. In the movie version, Warrior Angel saves his girlfriend's life.

Lex: Sounds like Hollywood went for the happy ending. In the comic-book world, when you're destined to save mankind, you're destined to be alone.

7.08 Blue
Seeing Nois typing an article, Chloe says it looks like Nois is “on a lethal deadline.”

7.09 Gemini
Nois pulls a gun on Lex, but Lex ends up knocking Lois unconscious.

7.12 Fracture
Clark tells Chloe that Nois went to the Daily Planet to write a story about Lex and Chloe replies “Lex will kill that story in a heartbeat.”

7.16 Descent
Jimmy shows Lois an incriminating photo that he claims is a Pulitzer prize level story, but they need Chloe’s help to refine the image. Lois gets impatient for the story and after Jimmy says "it wouldn’t kill us to wait a few more minutes", Gina arrives and pulls a gun on them. Gina shoots Lois in the shoulder and sticks her and Jimmy in a freezer. Jimmy tries to help an unconscious Lois, until he passes out too and they are saved by Clark

7.18 Apocalypse
Clark wearing the borrowed name tag "Lois Lane" is shot once in the shoulder and once in the gut and collapses. His blonde cousin, Kara, is also shot, but Brainiac says that the blonde cousin will heal and survive

*SEASON 8*
8.01 Odyssey
Tess to Lois: I realize Mr. Luthor gave you quite a bit of journalistic rope, knowing you'd eventually hang yourself. Me, on the other hand -- I'm a little less patient.
Lois is knocked unconscious by a Luthorcorp employee and falls to the ground. Clark steps over Lois’ unconscious body to be reunited with Chloe, the one he was searching for.

8.02 Plastique
Clark: You want to share a byline with me?
Lois: Oh, God, no. But I got you the obit.
Lois: Don't be so squeamish. You know what -- there was a time when I would have killed for an obit.

8.03 Toxic
Tess: Lois Lane, I haven't fired you yet?

8.05 Committed
Clark: Lois, it may not kill you to just show a little support.
Lois to Clark: Let's just be happy that I was under the gun and not you.
Clark stops Lois from stepping in front of a speeding Taxi
Investigating alone, Lois is zapped by a villain in an alley, falls down unconscious & is loaded into a hearse

8.07 Identity
Lois: I don't do too well with fortune-tellers. The last one I went to see told me that I was destined to fall for a guy who flies a lot and likes to wear tights.
Lois: So... am I going to live? (She gets no answer.)
Lois turns down a nightcap because"I like nightcaps, but, unfortunately, I'm on a lethal deadline."
Lois tries to investigate Sebastian, a dangerous MF alone. Had Clark not responded to her phone call, she would have died.

8.08 Bloodline
Lois: We're standing on our graves! We're gonna die, us together.
Clark: No one's gonna mess with Lois and Clark, right? Then she is knocked unconscious.

8.10 Bride
Lois says she needs a bite from the love bug as much as she needs one from "a black widow"

*Chloe calls Tess, "the widow Luthor" in Eternal 8.18.

8.19 Stiletto
Jimmy to Lois: I know you're dying for a story
In an alley at night, Lois to Clark: Go figure. I want the Red Blue Blur, I get the exact opposite.
Clark to Lois: It's dangerous. Eventually you'll find yourself in a situation you can't Stiletto yourself out of.
Lois: My editor would kill me for saying this
Lois: These heels are silent killers.
Chloe to Lois: There is bound to be a tequila (to kill ya) SHOOTER out on the town with your name on it.
Nois meets with Jimmy in an alley at night. She wants to be shot in the alley.
Nois calls for help, but her phone battery dies on her.
Nois complains to her editor that he BURIED her story.
Clark takes a bullet intended for her. If he hadn't been there she would have been shot.
Bruno: We say goodnight to the wannbe heroes, starting with Stiletto.

Chiri has great images to go with the death foreshadowing here:
http://chiri-chan.livejournal.com/593492.html#cutid1

Compiled Warrior Angel References on SV

Thanks to chiri for these. I thought I'd share. Here is every Warrior Angel reference SV has ever made in case you were interested.

Stray - introduces Warrior Angel. Bald, purple wearing red caped Alien. Fights his once BFF Devilicus. Clearly, Clark is paralelled to WA by Ryan and Lana; find out Lex identified with WA bc he was bald too.

Clark: You like comics?
Ryan: I like this one.
Clark: "Warrior Angel." Why him?
Ryan: Because he protects people who can't protect themselves. I like being around you, Clark. Its... peaceful.
---------------

Clark: Someone you could totally trust and would always be there for you?
Lana: It's just how I see you, Clark.

Lex: "Warrior Angel." I'm a fan myself. You must be Ryan. I'm--
Ryan: Lex Luthor. Clark told me all about you.
Lex: You know, I have one of the--
Ryan: Original first-edition panels framed in your house.
Lex: How'd you know that?
Ryan: You're rich. That's what rich people do. Collect stuff.
Clark: I see you've met Ryan.
Lex: Apparently, we're both big "Warrior Angel" fans.
Clark: I didn't know you liked comic books.
Lex: A strange visitor from another planet who protects the weak. When I was young, he was my idol. Not to mention the fact he's bald. I have the whole collection.

Ryan - continues this, says Lex is fighting his evil. Has WA #1 look like AC#1. Lex shares some issues, BIG fan. We find out that #66 is where they stop being friends; Covenant is Ep. 66.

Ryan: So, think I could check out that Warrior Angel collection?
Lex: That depends. Are your hands clean?

---------------------------

Lex: Warrior Angel, number 1, mint condition. I have two copies of every issue, one for the collection...
Ryan: And one for reading. Why do you like Warrior Angel so much?
Lex: It helped me through some tough times when I was younger.
Ryan: After your mom died?
Lex: How did you know that?
Ryan: Clark told me.
Lex: The world between these glossy covers was reassuring. You knew who the heroes and villains were. When you grow up, you learn that not everything is black and white.
Ryan: So now all you see are shades of gray?
Lex: Ryan, real life is not a comic book. Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty, make compromises.
Ryan: That's what your father told you. That doesn't mean it's right.

--------------------------------

Clark: Hey, buddy. How's your head?
Ryan: It still hurts a little. The newest issue.
Clark: Yeah, they had it at the gift shop. So what's up with the, uh, floating balloon?
Ryan: It's Warrior Angel's aerodrome. A floating fortress where he can get away from his troubles on earth.
Clark: Sounds like something everybody should have. I'm not sure about the floating part, though.
Ryan: Why not?
Clark: I have this little fear of flying.
Ryan: I didn't think you were scared of anything.

----------------------------

Lex: Hey. I brought you some comics.
Ryan: Clark beat you to it.
Lex: Yeah? Well, I bet he didn't bring you number 66.
Ryan: That's the rarest issue there is.
Lex: That's because it's the one where Devilicus turned against Warrior Angel.
Ryan: Weren't they best friends?
Lex: Once upon a time.
Ryan: Well, what happened to them?
Lex: Well, they, uh, ruled the Guardian Realm together until Devilicus told Warrior Angel that they should join forces and conquer humanity. Together, no one would be able to stop them.
Ryan: What did Warrior Angel say?
Lex: He refused. He believed it was a hero's sacred duty to protect those weaker than himself. Devilicus thought he was naive and vowed to destroy him and everything he stood for.
Ryan: Why do you think Devilicus went bad?
Lex: I'm not sure. Probably wasn't aware of it. You see, Ryan, in life, the road to darkness is a journey, not a light switch.
Ryan: You should remember that, Lex.

Reunion - We have Ollie tearing up Lex's comics (which talks about how Warrior Angel accidentally causes the death of Black Diamond's dad )

Duncan: Wait, why are Warrior Angel and Black Diamond fighting? I mean, they're friends. It doesn't make any sense.
Young Lex: Didn't you read issue 126?
Duncan: No, I didn't have any money that week. Why? What happened?
Young Lex: Okay, so, you know how Black Diamond's father is this super villain, right? Well, in 126, he busts out of jail, and Warrior Angel has to take him down. But there's this accident, and the guy dies. And --
Oliver: Look who it is, boys... Weirdo Angel and his trusty sidekick, Grease Spot.
Young Lex: Give it back, Ollie.
Oliver: That's Mr. Queen to you, little man.
Duncan: It's okay, Lex. I'll just get another one.
Alden: Yeah, Duncan will just get another one. Oh, oh, wait, he can't.
Geoffrey: Oh, yeah, that's right. His mommy doesn't have any money. That's why he's on scholarship.
Young Lex: Shut up, Geoffrey. Shut up, Alden. Give it back... Mr. Queen.
Oliver: Sure. You know what? Let's make this a two-parter.
Young Lex: Don't!
[ Laughter ]
Alden: Nice haircut, cue ball.
Geoffrey: Yeah. Come on. These girls aren't even worth it.
Alden: Loser.
Young Lex: One day, I'm gonna get those guys.

-----------------------------

Young Lex: My dad wants me to learn how to run his business.
Duncan: Are you gonna do it?
Young Lex: Hell, no. I can't stand that old bastard. What about you? What are you gonna do?
Duncan: I'm gonna help people, like Warrior Angel.
Young Lex: You better hit the gym. Spandex is tough to pull off.
Duncan: No, no, I don't mean like the cape and stuff. I'm talking like a doctor or a lawyer or something.
Young Lex: Lawyer?
Duncan: Yeah... working pro bono for the poor.
Young Lex: Don't let my dad hear you say that.
Duncan: Why? What's your dad got against poor people?
Young Lex: Everything. He thinks "poverty" is just another word for "lazy."
Duncan: What do you think?
Young Lex: I think it would drive my dad nuts if I got a job working with the poor. Got room for a partner?
Duncan: Allenmeyer and Luthor?
Young Lex: Luthor and Allenmeyer.
Duncan: Deal. Now all we gotta to do is graduate in one piece.

Action - filming the movie on Clark's farm. He got the cape at the end. Lex quotes Devilicus at the end and offers to give away his collection. No longer a fan.

Clark: When I said they could film at the farm, I didn't realize that half of Hollywood would show up at my doorstep.
Chloe: [ Chuckles ] At least revel in the irony that they've chosen a single-theater town to shoot their bazillion-dollar "Warrior Angel" film.
Clark: I guess I never really got into comic books.
Chloe: Oh, come on. Who doesn't love the story of a small-town boy who grows up to save the world from the evil Devilicus?
Clark: I didn't know you were such an avid follower.
Chloe: I'm not. It's just right now, fiction's a lot more appealing than reality. I mean, dating is so overrated. Who really needs the extra added headache of worrying about tables for two and wardrobe remorse on a movie night. [ Chuckles ] In other words, I've had plenty of free time to create Kara's fake back-story. Your cousin's secret identity is practically Google-proof.
Clark: That's great. Maybe when she clears her head and comes home, she'll appreciate it.
Man: Sorry, guys. Got to move you back.
Clark: All that for one star.
Chloe: Clark, Rachel Davenport is not just a star. She's practically her own constellation. I mean, don't you watch movies at all? Turns out miss super diva put a moratorium on all press interviews. God, an exclusive with her would definitely put a snap back into my editor's suspenders.
Man: And roll sound! Roll camera! Here we go. Roll playback. And......action.

Rachel: Steven, you won't believe the photos I got us, baby. Meet me at the French place in an hour.

-----------------------------------------------

Rachel: Attention, everyone. Mr. Kent and I need some one-on-one. Thank you. See you all in a little bit. Today we shoot the famous date scene. Warrior Angel's about to stand me up it's heartbreaking. In his defense, I'm sure he has a good excuse. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you...personally. That was really brave, what you did.

Clark: After what happened, I'm surprised you're not in the hospital.

Rachel: God, no. I got my start on a medical drama. Two seasons of bad memories. You mean you haven't memorized my entire acting repertoire?

Clark: You know, I don't watch a lot of movies.

Rachel: Clark, I'm kidding.

Clark: Oh.

Rachel: You know, it's refreshing for someone to see the real me, not just the tabloid version.

Man: I'm sorry to interrupt, ms. Davenport, but this girl said she absolutely needed to speak to Clark.

Clark: Rachel, this is my friend Chloe Sullivan. She works at the Daily Planet. She'd love to interview you.

Chloe: Hi.

Rachel: Hi. Usually, I don't give interviews, but you know what? For a friend of Clark's --sure thing.

Chloe: Wow. Okay. Except I'm -- I'm afraid I'm actually in line behind the sheriff.

-------------------------------
Loft scene:

Rachel: Tell me the truth. Are you different than other men?

Clark: How can you ask me that? You barely know me.

Rachel: I know you enough to see you walk around with a secret so powerful it won't let you close to anyone.

Clark: Um, "You should be with someone who can give you the love you deserve."

Rachel: You are that someone. But you want to lie and run away. Why?

Clark: Um, uh, "Penelope, if I ever hurt you" --

Rachel: you can't hurt me if you love me.

Clark: Whoa.

Rachel: It's okay. It's part of the scene.

Clark: Yeah, but I have a --

Lana: Girlfriend.

Clark: Lana.

Rachel: [ Scoffs ] Rehearsing lines.

Clark: This is, um -- Rachel.

Lana: I know. I'm Lana.

[...]

Lana: Well, I didn't want to freak her out, but Chloe might have found a clue about the attacker. She got sidetracked by her editor, but she e-mailed us this. Warrior Angel internet blogs. Not all the fans are enthusiastic about the film's interpretation. The movie stays true to the mythology in all ways but one. In the comics, Warrior Angel's girlfriend dies. And in the movie, she doesn't. Blogs, message boards, fan forums -- these are all pretty extreme. How are we supposed to narrow this down to the one psycho who's willing to kill?

Clark: There's one poster, Devilicusrebel, who's becoming more and more aggressive. "When will Davenport learn our hero lives in solitude? Her blood will unleash the truth"?

Lex: Keep searching. I just read about your heroics in the paper. Who needs Warrior Angel when we've got our own Clark Kent?

Clark: Actually, that's why I'm here. I was wondering if you could help me with a reference. You're the biggest Warrior Angel fan I know.

Lex: Was a fan. I haven't picked up a comic since we were friends. Back when I saw life as black and white. When I realized good and evil was gray, the stories lost their magic. Though I have to admit, yours is the last nose I'd expect to find in a comic.

Clark: Someone wants Rachel Davenport out of the movie.

Lex: This could be a clue to the next attack. "A Hero In Solitude." Issue number 5. One of my favorites.

-------------

Director: All right, we're rolling. Rolling! And... action.

Devilicus: [ Panting, gasps ] You'll never live to expose me.

Penelope: If it's not me, it'll be someone else. Sooner or later, you'll be seen for who you really are.

[ Air whooshes ]

Director: Cut! All right, that was good. Let's do it again.

-------------------

Clark: Rachel, the sheriff said that he wasn't able to come up with any more... leads. This place is surrounded by paparazzi. What are you doing?

Rachel: More like undoing six hours in a body harness and the stress of a death threat.

-------------------------------

Clark: Yeah. Rachel, what's this?

Rachel: A messenger delivered it.

Clark: Warrior Angel comic book?

Rachel: What's going on, Clark?

Clark: Let's go. We're leaving now. This place isn't safe anymore.

------------------------

Ben: Warrior Angel was all I had. He gave me something to believe in. He gave me hope.

Clark: Warrior Angel wouldn't try to kill someone.

Ben: You can't mess with someone's idol. That's exactly why nobody believes in heroes anymore. Including you, Clark. And that's where I come in. Just like Devilicus made Warrior Angel stand up and save the world. You need help. You just don't know it yet.

--------------------------------

Lana: Rehearsing lines? [ Chuckles ]

Rachel: It's in his eyes. You're the center of Clark's universe. I've only seen love like that once in my life.

Lana: What happened?

Rachel: [ Chuckles ] The director yelled "cut."

Ben: Updated call sheets.

RacheL; Oh, god. I can't escape work for three seconds? How did you find me?

Ben: Destiny.

Ben: Sorry, Lana. But there's a hero living among us, and there's only one way he'll accept his calling. You need to die.

------------------------------

Clark: What about his hard drive?

Chloe: Might help. I think it's too rational. I mean, if Ben is this fractured, we're gonna need to loosen a few screws of our own. Approach his next move like someone who's blurred the line between fiction and reality.

Clark: So let's think. If I'm Devilicus, what is the worst possible thing I could do to Warrior Angel to make him accept his destiny? Lana.

-------------------------

Ben: I can't. Don't you see? Clark was made for a greater glory, but until he gives up his own desires and focuses on the rest of the world, thousands of lives are at stake.

Lana: And mine doesn't matter?

Ben: I know it's not easy being a superhero's girlfriend, Lana, but Clark has to face his destiny alone. And you're standing in the way.

Lex: I thought you might enjoy this. Here.

Ben: [ Gasps ] These are the rarest Warrior Angel comics ever. They're worth a fortune. Why are you giving me this?

Lex: Because I've been known to believe in something after the whole world tells me I'm wrong.

Ben: Devilicus -- he said that exact line to the president in issue -- 175.

Lex: Ben, they dragged you in here kicking and screaming because you claim you saw a man with superpowers swipe a bullet out of thin air. I'm here to listen.

Ben: There's nothing to say. It was all in my head.

--------------------------------

Clark: Did you ever consider a career in acting?

Rachel: I wanted to say goodbye. But don't worry --I'll be back for the sequel.

Clark: What's this?

Rachel: Thanks -- for showing me Smallville had more to offer than a tax break. It's a little something from the movie. Every hero needs one. I signed on to Warrior Angel for publicity and a paycheck, but after meeting you, I'm starting to believe that heroes really do exist. There's something special about this one, Lana. Hold on to him.

Clark: I sure hope that comment about a sequel was a joke.

Lana: [ Chuckles ]

Lana: He needed hope, and he's not wrong. Millions of people look up to Warrior Angel. What if those people could look up to you instead?

Clark: Well, Lana, there's not even a million people in Smallville.

Lana: Clark, I just want to grab onto you and never let you go... but one day the world will need you more than I do, and I don't want to be the one holding you here.

Veritas and Fracture - flashes back to Lex playing WA on the Pilot newspaper about Ollie's parents' death.

ETA:

Eternal- Season 8
Young Lex: Feathers?! Feathers?! Hi. Who are you? Are you cold?
Young Davis: Are you him? Are you Warrior Angel?
Young Lex: No. But I want to be. I'm Alexander. What's your name?
Young Davis: I don't know.
Young Lex: What are you doing in here?
Young Davis: A man brought me here a few days ago. He made them put needles in me. Young Lex: But you don't look sick. Do you want to play? Nobody will know. My dad went to some farm. Come on!

This is not a filtered post.

I did a Chlois meme located here: http://massena1.livejournal.com/196903.html

Although I have enjoyed reading all the responses, so far, the replies to the last two questions (14&15) have been capturing my attention the most. I compiled the replies to those two questions I've received so far in case you are interested in comparing them.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Brunette Chloe and Clark sharing a moment, her hand on his cheek so we see the bracelet. Clark hears something and runs out, Chloe just smiles. We see Clark rip his shirt open as he runs down the street.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
*squee* *can’t breath*

MORE UNDER CUT

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Superman saves a brunette reporter from a risky situation she got herself into at LuthorCorp. When they land he says a snarky line and introduces himself, she snarks back and introduces herself as Lois Lane but we know she is Chloe Sullivan. He flys off and we see the look of love/admoration/interest in her eyes before she walks off. But finally we see that Lex has seen it all from afar, he walks back into LuthorCorp grinning evily.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Umm I would be speechless for a few seconds, but once that passes screaming/jumping/clapping/dancing would be in order and then I would rant and rave to my mother, then get online to chat it up with all the believers and just walk around with a goofy grin for a few weeks.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
I would want it - assuming Clark get a job there before the end - of it to be Superman's first save of Lois Lane flying into the DP/globe top possibly with Lex Luthor watching from LuthorCorp with his ring. Just a taste of "Oh shit, it's on now!" With glares all around. Yup.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
I think "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!" sums it up.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Wow...um...Five years later Jimmy, Perry and other reporters run out of the Planet and civilians turn their heads as the Flying man is sighted again. We don't see him that well, until we pan to Chlois who runs onto the roof top in her brown hair. She watches the red dot fly by with admiration and we zoom down to her bracelet (the cave bracelet). Switch to TW!Supes flying. And end.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Shouting, lots of jumping up and down, Squealing, and running out of my house. Then I'll call up random people screaming into their phones.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
We walk into the DP and see Clark, all in his bumbling persona, with Perry. The scene is being played as the classic introduction of Lois and Clark from the comics, etc. Perry leads Clark to a desk and we see the nameplate Lois Lane. We Chloisers freak out thinking that Nois actually got the calling. We see the back of one of the girl's head, she turns around, and we see Chloe standing there. Chloe and Clark share a secret smile and the rest as they say is history.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
I'm not gonna lie, I will cry. I will cry tears of joys.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
I definitely think it should be focused on Clark as Superman. I like the idea of seeing him tear his shirt open to reveal the S symbol, but maybe him (and Chlois could be there with him, heh) standing on the roof of The DP, hearing someone in trouble, and flying off with Metropolis and the globe in the background.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
"Told you!"

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
We get a shot of the Daily Planet, a front page story about SUPERMAN by Lois Lane, the paper is lowered to reveal Chloe reading it with a smile, brown hair and all. She walks over to her desk, we see the nameplate Lois Lane...we see Clark, all reporter-y, walk up to her and they do witty banter. Perry stick his head in and yells something at them. Suddenly something happens--someone cries for help--Clark runs off and is seen ripping his shirt to reveal the S...cut to others looking out the Daily Planet window as Superman streaks across the sky--they are pointing in awe, focus on Chloe smiling, Clark reflected in her eyes. The End.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Me, screaming loudly like a freak, jumping up and down and shouting "Nah nah nah!" to all the haterz in the world!

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Clark and Lex in some epic battle. The last Chlois image I'd like would be for Clark to take Chloe flying.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Squeeeeeeeeeee!

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Clark discovering the suit in the FoS, Chloe by his side. They share a look. Fade to Black.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
"ABOUT DAMN TIME, ALMILES!"

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Lex is in the back of a police car. Chloe as Lois Lane, Jimmy and Perry White are standing on the street near by. They all look up in the sky as they see a man fly, they say the lines "what is that?" "Is it a bird?" "A plane?" Jimmy says "No, it's a man" and Chloe replies "A Superman" then TW in the suit flies by the screen grinning at the camera.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Clapping. Screaming. Hooting. Hollering. Doing a little happy dance and getting online as soon as possible to have a cyber party with all the other Chloisers online.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
1 of the 2 things that will never happen--Clark flying or Clark in the suit

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Cry, scream, shout "I KNEW IT!"

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Clark and Chloe are at the DP, they kiss, then trouble comes, and Clark has to take off and you see him rip his shirt open and then end the show.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
I move my coffee table and do backflips.
But seriously, I think I'd cheer "YES!" really loudly in my living room. And I'd have to give praise to the people behind the show because it was obviously planned from the beginning.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Either a flash forward to Clark waking up on the side of Chloe and him hearing a scream then him putting on the suit running off or,and I like this one better, Perry entering the DP standing by Chloe then up in the sky we see Clark, Perry, looking up in awe, asks "Who is that flying man?" and Chloe simply says, "That's Superman.", the zoom up to see Clark flying, FADE TO BLACK.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
5 minutes of doing nothing but staring at my screen. Then after I'm all surprised out, I'll start jumping around and screaming, then run online.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
- Uhhh, the Vessel kiss. Seasons 6 and 7 never happened.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
- By going back and actually watching Season 7, which I'm almost sure to skip at this point.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Clark standing atop the DP with his cape flapping in the wind that pulls away until he's far off in the distance, then have him fly by the camera...I know it's not going to happen but I'm still going to be pissed if I don't get to see him in the suit.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Probably sit on my couch and say the following (warning the language is colorful)

"Holy Fucking Shit...They fucking did it...They actually Fucking did it....Holy Fucking Shit...I got to get online!!!!"

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
I want Lex to hold a press conference heralding a new era of LexCorp in Metropolis, Chlois getting the first question in and then there's a whoosh and as one, people turn to look up in the sky. Yes, it's corny, but I want the whole "Look up in the sky" line, I want to see Chlois' secret knowing smile and Lex's evil smirk knowing that the best battles with his former friend are about to begin (unless we're talking mind-wipe territory here which, I hope we're not, Lex has got to know). And then I want to see Clark looking down on the city, from the air. And no, I don't need to see the suit, the fact that he's in the air finally is enough. A small smile of happiness/acceptance would be nice as well.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Eat my words and start an AlMiles Apology thread. They would have got the best hook to the series right.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Clark and Chloe (as Lois) bending over the dead body of Lionel, vowing to expose Lex, as Perry White walks in with a newly-minted DP press pass.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
The same way I responded to "Delete," only more so. With fist-pumping and general glee. YES!! :D

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
At the Daily Planet you see the back of a woman on her computer writing/completing a 7-8 year story she is doing about her life in this unknown town of Smallville (or any other name of a town to hide the identity of Superman). There is a voice over from the future summarising her experience there. The camera focuses on her fingers typing and her arm. Lo and behold she wears multiple bracelets..with one in particular that we all know and are waiting to see return. An older-looking Clark Kent (with glasses) walks up to her desk, smiling asking if she wants to go for lunch. One one of the screens in the DP shows catastrpohe somewhere. Clark and this reporter avert their attention to the screen. Suddenly Clark is no where to be seen and Perry White tells this reporter to get her butt on the trail of this story. Once again, the camera focuses on her hand with multiple bracelets as she gathers her stuff from the desk.

We never see the face of this reporter..but at the scene of the catastrophe there is a streak in the sky. Cue voice over from the future again, talking about the man she always loved, and the hero she always knew he could be.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Grin like an idiot for a few days while feeling a sense of satisfaction that 6-7 years of my life spent watching this show actually paid off and I wasn't screwed over at the last minute.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
I'd like to see Lex in his office at Luthorcorp, having been thwarted by Clark, but by no means giving up. Chloe on the sidewalk outside the DP, with dark brown hair. (EDLois, and Lana for that matter, no where in sight.) Lex looks out his window and Chloe looks up. They both have amazed (but in different ways) expressions on their faces as Clark, in the suit, flies past. He flies over the DP globe and towards the camera and the last image we see is the S on his chest.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
I'd be completely surprised. I'd be so giddy I think I'd run out and buy enough copies of all the seasons on DVD (except, maybe, Season 6) and give them to all my friends and family for Christmas.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Chloe is a brunette and shares a moment with Clark (with glasses) in the Daily Planet. Then Perry comes and annouces a big incident somewhere and ask the both of them to cover it. Chloe takes a notepad and Clark goes to save the word and we see a glimpse of his superman costume.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
i have a big goofy smile on my face and for once i will compliment AlMiles on their job!

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?

Hmm, haven't really thought about it. But I think I'd kind of love it to be Clark and Lois (whoever that turns out to be) getting ready to go investigate something for an article when he hears someone who needs help and the last thing we see is Clark walking off unbuttoning his shirt and there's just a hint of the blue of his suit.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
I would probably pass out from shock that they actually did it.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?

I want a final reel of EDlois dying in Chloe's arms and Chloe not being able to use her powers to revive her. Chloe then going into hiding because she's unearthed a scandal that brings Lex back to SV (whether he's good or evil is up to the writer). 10 years later....She walks out of the DP, with her notepad in hand chasing after a story only to have someone call her back, its Clark calling for Lois, she's forgotten her car keys.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
I might pass out from disbelief.

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
Clark flying back to Chlois.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
Speechless. Then jump, yell, knock stuff over. Say things I'd never repeat in public...

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?

Chloe as Iconic Lois high up on the DP roof talking to Clark. He hears someone calling for help. She smiles and tells him to go. He smiles, "changes", and as Superman, takes to the sky. (Cue the brass section-let the music swell), and we see Superman (Tights, cape and all) zoom past the DP globe. The end. Fade to Black.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
I will scream and hoot and generally freak out joyously with a giant grin plastered on my face before hitting the web and going SEE! SEE! I told you so!!

14. What do you want the last image of SV to be?
I want them to twist it up. Not be afraid to go in their own direction (Chlois) 'cause the more videos I watch or the more recapping I do to the early seasons, the more I see they DID want Chloe to be Lois. They just weren't allowed to use the name. Now though...I wish they
would just take their own direction instead of desperately trying to go with the "normal" mythos.

15. So Chlois happens on the show, how do you respond?
I'LL BE JUMPING OUT OF MY SKIN! I'll be so happy! They would be so great for
going into such an original idea, it would blow my mind in the best way!
"I'll be whatever I want."
-Chloe Sullivan to Lionel Luthor

And next week, as far as the Daily Planet is concerned, she's going to be Lois Lane.

Given her threat to Lionel Luthor, I doubt that Chloe would ever borrow her cousin's full name (maybe first and middle names) for her pseudonym. She's seen the lengths that Lionel will go to get what he wants (Dr. Foster being killed for example) and that he's willing to ruin other people's lives (her father for example) simply to spite someone else.

On a somewhat related note, I've been doing some research into Lois Lane's backstory. It is not as consistent as some might think. Lois' parents and sister did not make their first appearance until 1959 and contrary to the image of Lois Lane as a "big city girl," the silver-age Sam and Ella Lane were farmers from Pittsdale. Another reference I saw suggested he might have been

The golden-age Lois is a cipher. She had no apparent family and I found one curious reference (which I'm trying to confirm) which stated that the name Lois Lane was an alias (just as Clark Kent was an alias for Superman). Naturally, I'm HIGHLY skeptical of this last bit since it just seems TOO convenient for my case that Lois Lane was once Chloe Sullivan. The only reason I'm bringing it up is because I hope that someone a little more up on golden-age Superman lore might be able to confirm or deny it for certain. I fully expect it to be false, but the golden age Superman was a depression era story and families sending their children away for the chance of a better life and taking new names for a fresh start kind of go with that territory, so I can't say its impossible either.

It is precisely the similarities between what I read and Chloe's situation and this supposed golden-age Lois Lane that make me doubt the veracity of the reference (her father is now unemployed and probably unemployable thanks to Lionel; Chloe is going to start writing for the Planet under the name Lois Lane). After all, the parallels between "Smallville's" Clark Kent and the golden-age Superman (an urban legend who leaps instead of flying) are already quite striking. How many more can they really add without just outright plagerizing it? Indeed, they seem to incorporate golden or silver age elements of the mythos as often as they incorperate modern elements (Related to this... the original Luthor to appear in the comics did not have the name Lex, he was just Luthor... and he had a full head of hair... shades of Lionel perhaps?).

Now to some responses... This first one is vital...

quote:Chloe's death drives the final wedge between Clark and Lex as friends, and now gives Clark/Superman a reason to hate Lex, as Lex will begin hating him once he shows up in Metropolis down the road, and starts stealing Lex's attention, etc.

I'm sorry, but what you're describing isn't Superman. This is Tim Burton's Batman with superpowers. In all your arguments for maintaining the post-crisis version of Lois Lane you may have missed the forest for the trees in this case.

Superman is not about hate. He's about Hope. Superman, from his earliest beginnings has been about fighting evil because its the right thing to do. He's the best of us. A paragon of truth and justice. Don't drag him down into the mud by making him about something as petty and empty as revenge.

Lois Lane once being called Chloe Sullivan does not change who Lois Lane is to Superman, much less who Superman is. Superman being motived by the desire to avenge the death of Chloe Sullivan (whether because she dies to keep the secret and/or because of Lex) destroys the fundamental core of Superman's character more completely than any supervillain ever could.

It's almost pointless to bring up after that last point, but it would also destroy Lois' character as well. It was Chloe who did a lot of hard work at the Planet using the name Lois Lane and if Clark ever had any romantic feelings for Chloe... his fascination with her very similar cousin becomes more creepy than romantic.

quote:Chloe is into wild tales of the fabulous and eccentric, ie meteor mutants, Lois wouldnt touch a story like that with a ten foot pole.

This is only true if you're going with the post-crisis Lois Lane. The golden-age Lois Lane was very much like Chloe. After seeing Superman in action she tried to convince her editor to run her story on the Man of Steel, but the editor wouldn't believe her. She investigated all sort of bizarre phenomena and was at times even seen as a nutcase because she insisted that Superman was real. Her editor even tried to stick on the advice for the lovelorn column her credibility was so suspect.

Next episode a legitimate reporter is going to tell Chloe that if she wants to go off investigating red-eyed aliens she should do it on her own time and that she's effectively persona non-grata at the Planet. If it turns out that the golden-age Lois really was an alias I'd say the producers are going out of their way to give us a modern day version of the golden-age Lois Lane (a woman who was WAY ahead of her time until the Comics Code Authority came into the picture).

quote:It would be too easy of a way out to incorporate that character into Smallville for the usually very crafty and comic-influenced writers.

Having a character start out named differently and only grow into the more familiar character in time is too easy and obvious? It sounds fairly crafty and comic-influenced to me. Just because a small percentage of the audience (and the posters here are a VERY small percentage of the overall viewers) figured it out ahead of time does not make too obvious to be possible. Some people picked up on the Mulder/Scully sexual tension years before anything happened onscreen (others denied it was there until the day they finally kissed onscreen). Some people just pick up on clues better than others.

quote:While I dont know how I feel about even an outside person coming into the show as Lois, because frankly they should leave some firsts for Metropolis. (how depressing life would be if I met everyone I'd ever truely know by the time I was 18)

The thing is, you're dealing with fiction ... more specifically a teen drama with a lot of anachronistic elements. By its very nature and the fact that the story is over when they become adults mean that many things come into play much earlier than they would in the real world.

quote:I dont think you would necessarily get into a situation where's she gets competitive with Lana or Chloe either.

By competition I didn't mean a direct competition and not even necessarily in Clark's mind either. What I meant was that Lois is going to have to knock the viewers' socks off to such a degree that we still want Clark to pick her over Chloe or Lana after four more seasons worth of episodes.

I just think that the expectations for any Lois who isn't going to be (or isn't already) a recurring character would just be so off the scale that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to please anyone.

quote:I get goosebumps every time I think about Chloe and Clark falling in love, and moving to Metropolis together. Embrace it! Don't deny it! It's going to happen, and it'll be FANTABULOUS!!! Mark my words!!!!!! CHLOE=LOIS!!!!!! Smallville=God!!!!!!!!

Ummm... okay... You do understand that this is only a TV show right, Humans?

quote: To use my famous “why bother?” I have to ask why go to the trouble of making this new and elaborate scenario to make Chloe Lois Lane yet never mention it and simply continue continuity with the same old Lois we’ve always had?

Because the comics and "Smallville" are two different stories. I only bring up comics here as a way to point out how little the change to Lois would really be, not because I am arguing that the comics need to be totally revamped. Further, since Lois' backstory hasn't been consistant, another variation of it doesn't matter near as much to the overall mythos as changes to Clark's backstory.

In this case I was trying (and apparently failing) to say that, while Lois once being Chloe would have an effect on the Superman mythos in the near term (how quickly she figures out that Clark and Superman are one and the same for example), in the long term (where Lois and Clark are now in the comics) the change would be trivial.

quote:Finally, and probably most of all, a matter that should probably end this whole debate, but I’m sure won’t as denial is a nasty and insidious life preserver, TV Guide came out today with this description of “Delete”:

“The Superman legend gets another twist as Chloe is revealed to be Lois Lane’s cousin in an episode that finds her mysteriously attacked by Clark and Lana.”

I’m sure others will read into that what they may, but I’m hoping it means this thread can be retired in a week .

As much as you might like it to, I doubt it. This thread has taken on a life of its' own.

The problem here is the notoriously unreliable TV Guide descriptions. The problem is that they tend to take what characters say literally, without taking context into account. With "Buffy" for example, I've seen TV Guide take a line that was said sarcastically and they will state it as if the character said it as a matter of fact. Based on when and how the line is delivered in the episode Chloe's reference to her cousin could take on any number of meanings, especially given the desire of Lionel to ruin her life and that of her family simply out of spite.

quote:p.s. I know I´ve use a lot of Marvel References but the ultimate line was on of the best Ideas in years(and less complicated than a Crisis) and JMS is one of my favorite authors.

I'll agree on the Ultimate line. After 30 years of backstory, including some REALLY bad story-arcs (Clone Saga anyone?) the Ultimate line took Spider-man back to his roots and started fresh. The thing that needs to be pointed out about Ultimate Spider-Man is time compression. Because they've got 30 years of backstory and characters to draw from, Ultimate Spider-Man has grabbed the best villains and character developments and incorporated them much earlier in Spider-Man's career than before. Mary getting in on the secret starting with issue thirteen is just one example of this.

There have also been significant changes to various characters to bring them tighter into Peter's life. Mary Jane was no longer the mysterious neighbor and wannabe actress whom he spends years only hearing about, instead she's a fellow science geek who's been his best friend for years. Its no longer a random radioactive spider that bites Peter, its part of an experiment being conducted by Norman Osborn and another tangent of that same experiment is what turns Norman into the Green Goblin. Otto Octavius became Dr. Octopus in the same explosion. Eddie Brock became the son of his father's old lab partner and Venom was not an alien symbiote but an experiment of his father's gone horribly wrong.

All of these changes resulted in a much tighter and easier to understand Spider-Man mythos. One thing I've noticed about progressive versions of the Superman mythos are they they keep drawing things together to create a more coherant whole. The most recent animated cartoon redefined Brainiac as a Kryptonian computer program that helped bring about the destruction of Krypton... a peripheral villain was suddenly transformed into an arch-nemesis with such strong ties to the hero that he actually made Luthor seem like a minor villain in the animated series by comparison. Faceless evils just don't have the impact of the personal ones.

The most interesting villains are the ones with the closest ties to the hero. The best are the ones that the hero inadvertantly creates themselves. Going back to "Buffy" one of the reasons I suspect that the second season is largely considered the best ever is probably because the ultimate villain of the season (Angelus) had such intimate ties to the heroine and was actually unleashed by Buffy in a moment of passion... ties that just were not matched by later big bads (though Faith as a supporting villain in season three came close).

By tying Clark and Lex so intimately in their early life you have a villain with strong ties to the hero... doubly so if Lex's ultimate fall is inadvertantly caused by Clark. It's also the reason why most viewers hate Lionel Luthor with such passion. We sympathize with Lex and no adversarial relationship is as potent as that of a dueling father and son (Star Wars anyone?).

In a similar vein, the more closely the hero's companions can only be strengthened by bringing them closer to the hero. The earlier versions of Lois Lane are not as central to the story as the Lois Lane who is Clark's confidante and partner (indeed one of the complaints for a while in the comics was that we were seeing TOO MUCH of Lois in the stories).

To me, a Lois Lane who is tied more intimately into the Superman mythos, rather than simply coming into the story late as a damsel in distress, can only strengthen the overall mythos of the Man of Steel. From a dramatic point of view, a Lois Lane who is also involved in the creation of both Superman and his arch-nemesis from the beginning is more interesting than one who joins the story late in the game. The battle between Clark and Lex is an epic conflict and anyone not in the story early can only be a peripheral player in the conflict.

In the comics Lois Lane is central player in this epic because she was there from the very first story, pre-dating even Lex Luthor. When the story starts in Metropolis, its fine for Clark to not meet such a central character in his life until then, because in that telling of the story she's introduced at the beginning. For "Smallville" however, the start of the story is highschool so it only makes sense for the most central character in Clark's life to be introduced there as well, because if she's not introduced early she won't be a central player in the epic.

Oy... You go away for a few days and have a couple hundred posts to go through.

Anyway... first things first. For all those who are adamantly against the concept of Chlois. If in the season finale, Chloe dyes her hair and adopts the name Lois Lane while going into hiding will you at least admit the POSSIBILITY that Chloe could be the future Lois Lane Kent.

I'm not saying you have to agree 100%, but would you at least entertain the chance that, in spite of producer's statements to the contrary, she will be Lois Lane?

Second, there seems to be some confusion about the backstories and age of Lois Lane and the other main characters of Superman through the various incarnations of the legend so I thought I'd do a little compilation on the many versions of Lois Lane (with a little note on Lex Luthor too).

The Golden Age Lois Lane
First Appearance: 1938
Age: slightly younger than Clark Kent
Grew up in the town of: Metropolis (or Cleveland... which is where the first few issues were set before the fictional Metropolis was created).
Parents and Siblings: None known.
Position at the Daily Planet: Initially forced to write a column for love lorn women, but through her determination became a full fledged investigative reporter.
First Meets Clark/Superman: At the Daily Star as Clark Kent.
Relationship with Clark Kent: Married to Clark Kent.
Lex Luthor was: Mad scientist who first encounters Superman as an adult. In his first appearance he had red hair (but was bald in subsequent appearances) and was simply called Luthor for the first few years.

The Silver Age Lois Lane
First Appearance: c. 1950
Age: 28 (the same age as Clark Kent)
Grew up in the town of: Pittsdale.
Parents and Siblings: Sam and Elle Lane - Farmers, Lucy Lane (ten years younger).
Position at the Daily Planet: Investigative reporter.
First Meets Clark/Superman: As Clark Kent at a summer camp while teenagers.
Relationship with Clark Kent: On again off again relationship with Superman (Clark Kent is just a disguise in this version). Suspected that Clark Kent might be Superman and spent a lot of time trying to prove that they were one and the same.
Lex Luthor was: Mad scientist who first encounters Superman as a teenager in Smallville. He loses his hair in a lab accident that he blames on Superboy.

Lois Lane from the Motion Picture
First Apearance: 1978
Age: several years younger than Clark Kent (she was just a little girl on the train when he went running by as a teenager).
Grew up in the town of: Metropolis.
Parents and Siblings: unnamed.
Position at the Daily Planet: investigative reporter.
First Meets Clark/Superman: As a kid she sees him running outside her train. As an adult, as Clark Kent at the Daily Planet.
Relationship with Clark Kent: Odd (need I bring up the Superkiss of Amnesia).
Lex Luthor was: Ruthless villain with bumbling sidekicks.

The Modern Age Lois Lane
First Apearance: 1987
Age: slightly older than Clark Kent.
Grew up in the town of: Metropolis.
Parents and Siblings: Sam Lane - Military Officer (deceased) and Elle Lane, Lucy Lane (approx. five years younger).
Position at the Daily Planet: Interned at teenager, worked part time during college, currently an investigative reporter and columnist.
First Meets Clark/Superman: As Clark Kent after he saves the Space Plane (he had not yet created the identity of Superman) though she doesn't get his name.
Relationship with Clark Kent: Married to Clark Kent.
Lex Luthor was: Ruthless businessman who was interested in Lois Lane and didn't meet Superman until a year after Superman had made his first public appearance. Later President of the United States. Currently a wanted fugitive.

Lois Lane from "Lois & Clark"
First Apearance: 1993
Age: same age as Clark Kent.
Grew up in the town of: Metropolis.
Parents and Siblings: Sam Lane - Scientist and Elle Lane - socialite (her parents are divorced), Lucy Lane (a few years younger).
Position at the Daily Planet: Investigative reporter and columnist.
First Meets Clark/Superman: As Clark Kent at the Daily Planet.
Relationship with Clark Kent: Married to Clark Kent.
Lex Luthor was: Ruthless businessman who was obsessed with Lois Lane and hated Superman for being more powerful than he was. Later wanted fugitive. Currently believed deceased.

Anyway, let's take a look at Chloe Sullivan. She's the same age as Clark (like the Silver Age version). She was born in Metropolis (like the Golden Age and Modern Lois), but has spent her teenage years in a small town (like the Silver Age Lois). She interned at the Daily Planet as a teenager (Modern version) and wrote an advice column for teenagers (like the Golden Age version). Her father was in a leadership position (like the Modern version) in a farming related business (like the Silver Age version) and he could wind up dead as a result of a Luthor (like the Modern version). Overall her homelife could best be described as disfunctional (like every version of Lois Lane).

The point is that if you actually take a look at Chloe Sullivan you find that her backstory IS actually that of your typical Lois Lane. The ONLY thing she doesn't have at this point is the name.

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I still personally think that no one has presented a valid argument on why "Chloe = Lois" would be good thing for the show. To me, it just seems like a cop out much akin to the infamous "it's all a dream" Dallas resolution.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Really? I'd contend that Chloe Sullivan dying while just happening to have a cousin who suddenly develops an interest in journalism, who goes to work for the very paper Chloe dreams of working for and marries the very man of Chloe's dreams is more of a cop out from my point of view.

What makes Chloe becoming Lois a good thing is that it pulls the continuity of the Superman mythos presented by the series into a tighter package. Some may not think that's not entirely realistic, but that's the difference between real life (where things dangle and don't always make sense) and a legend (where everything in the story has a purpose).

Yes, SMALLVILLE may only be the beginning of the legend, but that just makes it even more important that Lois be there. The more important the character to the overall legend the earlier they should be introduced.

So, in the tight continuity of this telling of the legend, not only do Clark and Lex get their start in Smallville, but Lois (a more important character overall than Lex will ever be) does as well. Likewise, it creates a better full circle feeling for the end of the series. We meet Chloe Sullivan before we meet the "adult" Lana Lang. The ongoing story really gets its start when Clark walks away from Chloe and tries to walk up to Lana Lang.

What's interesting here is that while Lana is the girl of Clark's dreams at this point he really knows nothing about her and she really knows nothing about him. Meanwhile, he clearly knows the girl he walked away from and she knew him well enough to be able to bet money on the precise moment Clark was going to turn into a freak show while approaching Lana Lang.

For the story to truly come full circle Clark needs to walk up to Lois Lane (i.e. the former Chloe Sullivan), the woman of his dreams whom he knows everything about and who knows him for who he is.

In this respect it also relates to one of the concepts espoused by the comics which I particularly like. Namely that Lois and Clark are soulmates and have always been together, even before they knew it and they always will be. Chloe Sullivan is right there by Clark's side from the very first episode, opening his eyes to things and making him want to be a hero, just as any Lois Lane worth her name should be.

Another reason why Chloe once being Lois Lane would be good for the show is that it gives a purpose to the love triangle that blossumed between Clark, Chloe and Lana. If Chloe is Lois Lane then the writers have been paying homage to one of the Silver Age's biggest traditions, the Lois/Lana/Superman love triangle where the two women constantly battled for Superman's affections.

Further, since this is a work of fiction and therefore everything has a purpose, what's the point of including a love triangle if someone doesn't win in the end? For that matter if you're going to do a love triangle you should do it right and have the underdog win (I know its a cliche, but its one of those warm fuzzy ones) Who could be a more of an underdog than the girl many people assumed existed just to give Clark an interest in journalism and who would die horribly at some point towards the end of the series?

Lois Lane could NEVER be seen as the underdog in any love triangle involving Clark Kent, so introducing a seperate Lois Lane robs the battle for Clark's heart of a lot of the power that having the girl who was right in front of him the whole time win his heart.

Going along with this and another reason that Chloe Sullivan would be a good thing for the show is that she has been has been developed to such a point and in a manner that her character IS that of Lois Lane in all but name. For all the pontificating that Lana, Chloe and Martha combined equal Lois Lane I have yet to see a single person who has made this claim explain what Lana and Martha bring to the equation that Chloe doesn't already have.

The point is that if a seperate Lois Lane shows up, she will feel like a carbon copy of Chloe Sullivan to many viewers. Likewise, with all the backstory that has grown up around Chloe in the last three years she would be a pale imitation at that. Speaking as a writer, why on Earth would you wipe out three years of character development just to get essentially the same character with a different name?

Okay, so this Lois would be different from any previous version of the character, but no more so than Clark or Lex are.

Let me turn the question I started to answer above around now. I've yet to hear a coherant explanation of why Lois being different from previous versions of the character would be a BAD thing.

What is so special about the current incarnation of Lois Lane that it must always be that way from now unto eternity? For that matter, Lois and Clark's backstories (along with all the rest) are being re-written in the comics as we speak by the Birthright series.

As I've shown above, the ONLY true constants about Lois Lane through every incarnation are that being the best reporter she can be is her life and that she's in love with Clark/Superman.

To me that is why, with regards to SMALLVILLE, Chloe Sullivan is the best possible person to be Lois Lane. It isn't your father's Superman... its a new story where you often want to root for Lex Luthor, where Jonathan and Martha are pretty cool parents, where Jor-El may be the biggest villain of them all, where centuries old native american cave paintings fortell the future and Clark Kent is saving the day from superpowered mutants without a costume or glasses in sight.

And the most important point... SMALLVILLE and the possibility of Lois Lane once having been Chloe Sullivan has done more to fire my interest in Superman than any of the comics published in the last five years have. I'm currently collecting the comics mostly out of loyalty at this point, but I haven't had a real passion for the stories there in years. The last story that really intrigued me was the start of the Electric Superman arc. Ugly costume aside, the total change of his powers combined with his recent wedding created a real sense of new territory for the character.

That's what SMALLVILLE and Chlois represents to me... fresh new territory with old favorites that's interesting to explore. If all I really wanted was the same old same old I'd just read back issues. The reason Lois, Clark, Lex and all the rest continue to thrive more than sixty years after their creation is because the legend is constantly being retold in a manner that fits the times. There is no "one true" Superman or Lois Lane, just a gestalt of legends that are greater than their whole.

As always, this post ended up a LOT longer than I thought it would be.
